Avis vs CapeDrive in Cape Town: An Honest Comparison

We're a local Cape Town car rental company. We're going to compare ourselves honestly to Avis — including the cases where Avis is genuinely the better choice. No fluff, just facts.

The Setup

Avis is one of the world's largest car rental companies. They have a desk at Cape Town International Airport (CTIA), a large fleet, loyalty programmes, and instant global recognition. CapeDrive is a local Cape Town operator based in Bloubergstrand, about 15 minutes from the airport.

People search for "Avis Cape Town alternative" primarily for one reason: price. Airport desk rates from major chains are substantially higher than local operators. We're going to explain why that is, where that price difference actually comes from, and whether cheaper always means better.

Price Comparison: Economy Class Daily Rate

We compared economy class (Toyota Starlet or equivalent) daily rates for a typical 3-day booking in Cape Town in 2026. Avis rates are from their direct website and vary significantly — here we use mid-range short-notice rates:

Estimated 3-day total (economy)~R750 + deposit~R2,100–R3,000 + hold

Note: Avis rates vary based on booking timing, loyalty status, and promotions. Rates shown are indicative short-notice walk-in rates. Pre-booked rates can be significantly lower.

The Deposit Question

This is where many travellers get an unexpected shock. Major chains at Cape Town Airport typically require a credit card hold of R8,000–R20,000 for economy and compact vehicles. This is not a charge — it's a temporary hold on your available credit limit.

For many international travellers, that hold can effectively max out a travel credit card and cause problems for the rest of the trip. The hold is released after the vehicle is returned, but it can take 5–14 business days to clear.

CapeDrive's deposit is R3,900 in cash (or card), refunded in full within 14 days after return if the vehicle is undamaged. It's predictable, fair, and doesn't impact your credit limit.

When Avis (or a Big Chain) Makes More Sense

We said we'd be honest. Here are the scenarios where choosing Avis or another major chain is genuinely the right call:

You need a one-way drop in another city

If you're flying into Cape Town and driving to Johannesburg, or flying home from George after a Garden Route trip, you need a chain with depots in both cities. CapeDrive is Cape Town-focused — one-way drops to other major cities are limited.

You're on a corporate account with Avis Preferred

If your company has a negotiated Avis rate that gets you down to R250–R350/day with priority service, the convenience of the airport desk may be worth it. Loyalty rates can be competitive.

You need a very last-minute booking

Avis has a large enough fleet that walk-ins at the airport are usually accommodated. CapeDrive requires advance booking — we're a smaller operation and pre-booking ensures vehicle availability.

You need a very specific vehicle class

Luxury sedans, 9-seater minibuses, or specialist commercial vehicles. Large chains have wider fleet diversity. Contact CapeDrive first — we can often source specific vehicles through our network — but for instant availability on unusual classes, chains have the edge.

When CapeDrive Makes More Sense

Budget is a priority: You're looking at 40–60% savings for the same vehicle class and the same insurance coverage. Over 7 days, that's R1,500–R3,000+ in your pocket.
Your credit card limit is limited: R3,900 cash deposit vs. R15,000 credit hold. If you need your credit available for your trip, this matters.
You want personal service: We're a team, not a call centre. When you WhatsApp us, a person responds. When something goes wrong on the road, you reach someone who knows your booking.
You're based in Cape Town or staying for a month+: Monthly rates from R4,500/month vs. R18,000+ with chains. Monthly rental from a local operator is the obvious choice for residents and long-stay visitors.
Your flight might be delayed: We adjust your collection time around your flight at no charge. Chains charge for late collections or cancel your reservation.

The Verdict

For the majority of Cape Town car rental use cases — airport arrivals, day trips, weekly rentals, monthly rentals for residents and long-stay visitors — a local operator like CapeDrive will save you significant money with equivalent or better service.

For one-way intercity trips, last-minute walk-in needs, or corporate accounts with negotiated rates, a major chain can make more sense.

The decision isn't really about brand trust or vehicle quality — both options offer insured, maintained vehicles. It's about how much you want to pay, how flexible your booking can be, and whether you need the specific capabilities that only large chains provide.
